Evening was coming on by the time we reached the sleepy town of Beau Ridge. The trip was becoming second nature now. As far as the town, things were definitely looking different than they had during Carnival season. All the decorations had been taken down, and there was a calm quiet that pervaded the main street—at least aside from the crickets that were starting to make themselves known as the days lengthened and warmed.

We made our way to the bungalow of Lucas Fontaine. He was not on his front porch this time, and when I gave his French door a gentle rapping, the dog did not erupt into a fit of barking as I might have expected. Xavier stood down on the cement path with his arms crossed in front of him, letting Cherie and I take the lead.

When Lucas finally answered the door, it looked like he’d been having a rough go of it. His peacock zest had faded, and he had dark rings around his eyes. I couldn’t imagine he’d been sleeping much, and I caught a few gin vapors wafting out of his open door. He gave me the kind of look that said volumes.

Really? The look seemed to say. Again?

“I just can’t get rid of you two, can I? And I see you’ve brought a fella.” Lucas’ bloodshot eyes gave Xavier a quick once over. “Well, come in I guess.”

“We would have called, but I didn’t have your phone number.”

“Oh, I think that is probably for the best, don’t you? And I mean really, who doesn’t love three unexpected guests showing up after dark?”

“Are you doing OK? You look …”

“Oh, you don’t have to say it. Hi there.” Lucas stuck out a hand and gave Xavier’s a shake. “Forgive me for being rude. It has been a rough few days. As I’m sure you’ve heard, a good friend of mine passed away suddenly.”

“Sorry for your loss,” said Xavier, shooting me a look to let me know how uncomfortable he found this situation. I think he preferred confronting farmers with shotguns to this.

After all those pleasantries were out of the way, Lucas cut off the jazz record he had playing and the four of us all sat in a ring around his living room furniture. I noticed he didn’t offer us coffee or anything after the last time. He must have seen how neither of us had touched it and decided not to waste his time or his beans on such rude guests. I also noticed that the golden scepter, which had been so prominently displayed on the mantle, was now nowhere to be seen.

“So, what do I owe the pleasure? I mean … again.”

“We’ve come to ask for some more information about Mr. Benoit.”

“Of course you have. For what better way to let a wound heal than to keep poking at it for weeks.”

“We will make it quick,” said Cherie.

“You girls writing his obituary or what?”

I shifted in my seat. “Something like that.”

“And you, Mr. Xavier Ordoyn.
